levels. Most people who argue against same sex marriages feel that homosexuality is a very immoral reality and that by allowing same sex marriages the societys foundations will be threatened. The arguments, from a legal perspective, seem to state that same sex marriages are not legal because they are not between a man and a woman and that same sex marriages threaten the institution of marriage, something intended for bringing children into the world. People are also fearful that same sex marriages will give homosexuals the same access to economic privileges that are set aside for married couples. The following paper examines the ethical argument in favor of allowing same sex marriages, and also argues that same sex marriages do not threaten any aspect of the institution of marriage and should be legalized. Same Sex Marriages The United States, according to what most of us know to be true, was founded on freedoms. The United States is, today, a nation of individuals, a nation of people who believe strongly in autonomy. As one author states (in a fax sent in by the student), "In many ways, autonomy is the all-American value or virtue" (24). Autonomy is essentially a belief that the individual has many different rights, and they have the right to pursue their own well being, their own dreams, their own style of living. Americans are revered for this, or so think the majority of Americans. This brings into play the conditions of nonmaleficence, which is essentially a belief that if no one is being hurt, seeking ones own personal freedom is very powerfully respected.
