In fact, many applaud U.S. military peacekeeping missions and attempts to create justice in the world. If certain factions were keeping the people down, the U.S. would heroically jump in and rescue the people. Of course, foreign policy has changed over the years an in Latin America, the U.S. now deals with some turmoil and chaos, but it is a region that is largely under control. Still, foreign policy matters, even in the rather lackadaisical state of Argentina. Once a place where frenzy was commonplace and the likes of Eva Peron would create a dynamic center, things have died down. And while foreign policy in Argentina has not died, it has taken on a slow but steady pace. In evaluating U.S.- Argentinean relations, there are several areas of concern. II. How the United States Military Equation relates to Argentina The United States is concerned with the protection of Third World interests, a foreign policy focus that has emerged since problems in Europe have cooled down (Klare, 1990). It is important to remember that previous to the 1990s Communism was prevalent. There was an East and West Germany. There was much strife in Ireland as well. Hence, as these things took a back burner, the U.S. military equation would be aligned with other nations. In fact, it has been noted that a focus on western Europe has created a situation where the South was neglected (1990). It was suggested in fact that the United States should adopt a more serious "Third World military policy" which would entail a direct intervention when absolutely necessary (1990).
