Hofstede did a well known study using questionnaires from employees at IBM from different countries; he uses their responses to make assumptions about the nations in which they work (McSweeney, 2002). Hofstedes theory would come to claim that there are a variety of dimensions for which he chose four. Many are familiar with these concepts already. There is the concept of masculine versus feminine cultures and individualist cultures as opposed to collectivist cultures. For example, many realize that the U.S. is a driven, individualist culture but this is not true of other cultures around the world which value the elderly for example as well as family life to the exclusion of the pursuit of great wealth. Each culture has a degree of these attributes and the differences may become important when managing human resources. Bing (2005) explores the four categories. Individualism is "the degree of individual or group orientation" (Bing, 2005). Here it is suggested that people are more group oriented or are individualists. To be fair, within all cultures, there are people who are more outgoing than others. There is a disparity between those who are introspective and those who like to be with other people. Yet, certain cultures are conducive to socializing and others are not. The degree to which the people at IBM would feel comfortable or uncomfortable dependent on which country they found themselves in might indicate something about that country. In terms of individualism versus collectivism, it is found that countries that scored high on the individualism front are the United States, Anglo nations in Europe, Nordic counties, and Latin Europe ("Hofstedes dimensions," 2005).
