Typically, present problems are blamed on childhood experiences. Cognitive psychology, on the other hand, would look at the present day and focus on thoughts of the individual. What is going through the clients mind? If he is thinking "I am no good. I cant do anything right, " that is a clue that something is awry. The idea of cognitive psychology, simply put, is to address the voices in ones head, and not the ghosts of the past. Freudian psychology involves psychoanalysis; Sigmund Freuds model of the mind is mechanistic (McLeish, 1993). Later on, behaviorism would evolve and that would be a complete break from the Freudian ideal (1993). Cognitive psychology is also rather different than than psychoanalytic view as it relies on what is and not on what was, or what might have been. Cognitive models, in general, come from the Gestalt school of thought which focuses on thinking patterns. Social work practices rely on psychological models because the work has to do with people. Thus, psychological theory is helpful in confronting clients who often have problems beyond the scope of the traditional professional relationship. Social workers must confront alcoholics, pedophiles, spousal abusers and other characters who would benefit from psychological help. Thus, the social worker must focus on a psychological paradigm in order to be successful in his or her field, whether they work as public servants or are in private practice.
