Lamba, the student who is writing about this subject must first consider that Breton was the founder of the modernist French philosophy known as Surrealism. The Surrealists rebelled against
anything remotely resembling social norms, because they fervently believed that conforming to the expectations of others was detrimental to creativity. The major impetus of the Surrealist movement was early
twentieth-century Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freuds 1900 book, The Interpretation of Dreams. Many of the surreal images captured on canvas, on film or in print emphasized dream-like imagery, which bore
little likeness to the reality of the corporeal universe. Breton and his fellow Surrealists sought to justify their movement through the philosophical marriage of scientific concepts and Freuds studies
on the unconscious mind. Mad Love represents the articulation of Bretons attitudes concerning creativity, dreams, revolution, and most importantly, amour. In Mad Love, Breton attempts to accomplish the impossible
- to textually recreate the basic emotions of passion and desire, which moves man to think, to create and to love. He believed that this was the true path
toward any type of understanding of the human condition, not reason. Mad Love actually serves as a metaphor of a voyage fraught with turbulence and turmoil. There is
