the male persona. Irigaray is often compared to Simone de Beauvoir, who also concurred with much of the rhetoric that had been spewed during the twentieth century. Beauvoir along with the other radical feminists maintained that gender was more social and psychological than biological. In other words, girls grow up to be feminine largely because their mothers and fathers buy them dresses and dolls, and not because there is an inborn propensity to like pink and lace. Feminists criticized the concept of family and instead, explored other avenues of self worth and individuality that would preclude the male influence. Without men, women are different. But Irigaray stood out from the crowd of feminists as much of her writing focused on spiritual aspects as opposed to mundane matters. Thus, although Irigaray is indeed a feminist, she pursues other areas of thought that are now equated with a heightened spirituality. Of course, many feminists have been associated with New Ageism and also, they are able to take a more central role in such avenues than in the traditional church where they have to fight for ordination, for example. Yet, Irigaray provides for the people an even stronger philosophy that melds spirituality with feminism. Irigaray offers the world hope and a way to change. She has come up with a way of looking at things that transcends traditional feminist thought. The thesis of this paper is that Irigaray does provide a way for women to reach beyond themselves as no other philosopher has done before. The proof of this is in her own writings. In providing proof for Irigarays importance, it does help to compare her with other similar philosophers such as Beauvoir.
