need to know about the painter or the time period to truly enjoy a painting such as the Mona Lisa. Or, as it relates to African masks, "With careful attention
to the masks artistic and symbolic detail, it is possible to perceive these same values within the masks themselves."1 There are elements of understanding that help one further become knowledgeable
about a piece of art, as gained through research and education. But, again, one need not know anything about a piece of art in order to understand and feel something.
With that in mind the following paper analyzes a photograph of what appears to be an African mask, as provided by the student requesting this paper. Analysis of Art
The picture, of what appears to be a mask, is recognizably a human form for it is clearly a depiction of a human
face. But, if one puts aside the knowledge that it is a human face one can analyze the mask and the elements of the mask further. As such the remainder
of the paper focuses on the mask as an object. It seems as though this piece is made from wood and that
it was carved. (African masks were often made of wood).2 The color is a very dark brown and there are different textures that would suggest it is carved. For example,
the top of the piece has grooves in it that one could obtain through carving in wood. This top piece shaped something like a crescent moon but without points on
either side, perhaps reminiscent of a banana almost as it gets thicker in the middle and narrows at either end of the curve. Then the piece bulges out from that
