All living organisms must somehow be able to generate energy. Animals accomplish this by converting
organic matter into forms that they can use to develop, produce offspring, maintain their own body structure, and to adapt to their environment. Plants, in contrast, do this by
converting energy that they glean from the sun. Although the specifics differ, the process through which this occurs for both animals and plants is metabolism. The term metabolic
efficiency relates to the length of the food chain. In other words, does the organism glean its energy directly from the sun or does it do so by digesting
an herbivore that has eaten plants that obtained their energy from the sun? The process of metabolism is actually broken into two broad processes, catabolism and anabolism. The
first, catabolism, occurs in order to break down organic matter. An example can be seen when organisms are harvesting energy through the process of cellular respiration. Anabolism, in
turn, constructs cellular components themselves through an investment of energy. Proteins and nucleic acid are two examples of those components.
