time of experimentation and it was also a time when gender was not quite as confusing. For example, at the time, the phrases cross-gender or trans-gender were not used. Boys were boys and girls were girls. Most gay men and lesbians were in the closet. It was just as much a time of innocence and exploration as it was a time of denial. It was also a time when medical ethics would be stretched. It was not as if the mad scientists decided to experiment on some boy, and not tell the parents, just to see what would happen. That would be completely, undeniably unethical. Rather, John (a pseudonym) had a botched circumcision (Colapinto 54). It was almost an attempt to undo what could not be undone. In deciding to turn this boy into a girl, there would be no harm done. It would also have the added benefit of furthering science. It seems as if it was practical a solution. Rather than having a castrated child, the parents would instead have a girl. At the time of the circumcision however, John was only eight months old (54). It could hardly be something hidden. The operation to turn the boy into a girl had been followed by intensive social, hormonal and mental conditioning (54). This was the first case of sex reassignment that had been reported as it concerns a normal child but because he was born an identical twin, his brother would provide the scientists with a matched control (54). In retrospect, it seems to be an unethical approach to a negative outcome. How could the world turn this infant into a different gender? Can sex assignment be so callous?
