Introduction In Henrik Ibsens play "An Enemy of the State" we are provided with a powerfully relevant story. It is the tale of one man who struggles against a society that is ignorant and more concerned with money than they are with the truth. Dr. Stockmann sees this, but is unable to make the people accept the truth. In all honesty, Dr. Stockmann fails to think outside his scientific reasoning. He is, in a sense, blind to those who do not believe in science. This, in combination with the inherent greed of the people, serves to make Dr. Stockmann a character who does not achieve success. In short, Dr. Stockmann does not pursue the correct course of action in attempting to help his town.
