A mother and daughter relationship in The Joy Luck Club effectively illustrate how Tan is quite successful at telling tales of cultural struggle and the inherent commitment that accompanies it. In portraying the characterization of these various bonds and relationships, the authors quintessential components are to draw together the very basic qualities that exist within the confines of Chinese and Chinese-American cultures. While there are, indeed, similarities with regard to the two very diverse concepts, there are even more differences that serve to cause friction in relation to respect for ones heritage. The Joy Luck Club is indicative of the prolific writers inherent ability to pursue even the most complex of concepts. Not unlike her other works, which include the famous The Kitchen Gods Wife, Tan appeals to the innermost recesses of the readers soul. The author has a long history of reaching out and inviting her audience to experience with her the sometimes intense and often expansive sense of Chinese and Chinese-American cultural existence that is quite clearly portrayed within her works, with The Joy Luck Club proving as no exception.
