separate ourselves from our parents and create our own identity; we try to define ourselves on our own terms, not only in relation to someone else. This paper discusses the ways in which Amy Tan and Nancy McCabe found their identities and self-worth through their struggles. Discussion Nancy McCabes book Meeting Sophie is the story of her decision to adopt a Chinese baby. But its much more than that; its also the story of her struggle to understand what it means to be part of a family: "blood family, adoptive family and even the dysfunctional family-like structure of a college English department" ("Meeting Sophie"). McCabe is a feminist liberal at a conservative church-affiliated school in the South, and she sticks out like a sore thumb ("Meeting Sophie"). She is patronized by other faculty members, who try and convince her to act more like them and become real "Southern ladies" ("Meeting Sophie"). In this dysfunctional academic family, McCabe finds a replica of her own family, where she was cast as selfish and self-centered, even though she got good grades and tried to help out when her father got sick ("Meeting Sophie"). In other words, she has spent her life trying to live up to the expectations others place on her; when she fails-according to them-it overwhelms her and undermines her sense of self and her self-esteem ("Meeting Sophie"). The "family myth" has such an effect on her that McCabe "doubts her ability to care for her baby," until she is able to guess her babys allergies, a diagnosis neither the adoption authorities nor the doctors were able to make ("Meeting Sophie"). It turns out that the baby is allergic to lactose and antihistamines, just as McCabe is, which is why she was able to spot them ("Meeting Sophie"). But identifying ...
