Although McDonalds is most assuredly not the only culprit corporations such as Philip Morris, Coca Cola and Disney are also implicated in the research--this American international corporation has come to symbolize the rampant American cultural imperialism that many feel is irreparably harming much of the world. For example, author Joseph J. Tobin relates how Western consumer culture has drastically altered the face of Japan. Everything from Disneyland --to Coca-Cola --to McDonalds can be found easily in Japan (Tobin 2). Plastic food and sweatshirts with English slogans are commonplace. Nevertheless, while all of this is undoubtedly true, the essays in Tobins book also serve to show how the Japanese retain their essential identity while adapting themselves to a Western style consumer culture. Other critics, however, fail to see anything redeeming in the spread of American consumerism. For example, in his provocatively entitled book Jihad vs. McWorld, Benjamin Barber protests against the multinational corporations, and particularly against the media conglomerates, that he feels control the means of intellectual production. In so doing, he ironically comes close to Marxist ideology in his passion to defend democracy. Barber uses the term "Jihad" to refer to the rejection of modernization and consumerism coming from the West no matter where it occurs in the world. However, he is certain that the consumerism typified by McDonalds, i.e. the "McWorld" reference,will eventually win out. "My prediction that Jihad will eventually (if not any time soon) be defeated by McWorld rests almost entirely on the long-term capacity of global information and global culture to overpower parochialism and to integrate or obliterate partial identities" (Barber 82).
