years and remains possibly the best book on war ever written. This paper discusses the novel, the time in which it is set, and answers questions about it. Discussion The novel is told by Paul B?umer, who enlisted in the German army along with three of his friends: Albert Kropp, M?ller, and Leer. (Remarque). Also in this group are three other men who have befriended the younger men since they began their enlistment; these are Tjaden, Haie Westhus and Stanislaus Katczinsky (Remarque). Katczinsky, whom everyone calls "Kat," is the "old man" of the group at age 40; all of the others are only 19, and B?umer at least is very conscious of their youth and the fact that they are very likely to be killed before they even have a chance to live (Remarque). The story of these seven men is actually a love story, for they care deeply for one another, bonded as only those who serve in combat can be. Remarques observations of life in the trenches are harrowing: he describes the true horror of war, something that he and the others didnt fully understand until they got to the front line (Remarque). Like virtually all young people, he and his friends-who were all at the same class at school-had the idea that war is glorious and noble, an attitude encouraged by their teacher, Kantorek (Remarque). Kantorek filled their heads with words like "honor," "country," "duty" and "patriotism," all without leaving the safety of his school room. When B?umer talks about Kantoreks speeches to them, he speaks for all young men who go to war to satisfy the bloodlust of older men who dont have the courage to put on the uniform themselves.
