advanced combat aircraft in the world, the SR-71 Blackbird and the F-18 Hornet. Discussion of the Aircraft The SR-71 Blackbird is an almost mystical aircraft. It was
super-secret, flew at Mach 3.2 at 85,000 feet, and sneaked in for landings under cover of darkness (Kucher). Despite the secrecy (the "Blackbird" was a reconnaissance aircraft), it soon
became common knowledge (at least among military personnel) that the Air Force was flying one of the most gorgeous airplanes ever designed. The bird was 107 1/2 feet long
with a wingspan of 55 feet 7 inches; it stood 18 feet 6 inches high and weighed 60,000 pounds ("Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird"). But measurements arent enough to do the
bird justice, because it was stunningly beautiful. Painted black and with a wing that was extruded from the body in one harmonious unit, it embodied grace and power; it
looked like almost like a dagger. Its amazingly clean design has made it a favorite of pilots, crews and the public for over 40 years. Most of
the Blackbirds were retired by the early 1990s, though a few of them flew until later in the decade. But the F-18 is still very much in service and
is flown by both the Navy and the Marine Corps. Its become something of a workhorse for both services. This aircraft is not sleek and beautiful like the Blackbird;
instead, its striking because of its utilitarian appearance. It looks like it means business, and there is a certain elegance in that, as well. The Hornet is 60.3
