Anger management programs have become so popular that some court judges are sentencing certain offenders to attend anger management classes (Neary, 2001). It is safe to say that most of the programs are not really successful because, as a New York Times reporter said, they are put together haphazardly (Neary, 2001). Aggression Replacement Training as developed by Dr. Arnold Goldstein and Dr. Barry Glick is different, it is a structured program that has been used successfully in the judicial system, in private therapy/counseling, and in schools, among other places (Neary, 2001). Aggression Replacement Training (ART) is an intensive 10-week multimode intervention program that includes three components: 1. SkillStreaming, during which participants are taught ProSocial interpersonal skills, such as what they can do instead of aggressive behaviors (The United States Center for Aggression Replacement Training, n.d.). Skillstreaming is the behavior component (Thurston County, 2001). It teaches at least 50 different prosocial behaviors (Goldstein and Glick, 1994). 2. Anger Control Training, which teaches participants what not to do when they are provoked (The United States Center for Aggression Replacement Training, n.d.). Anger control is the emotional component (Thurston County, 2001). 3. Moral Reasoning Training, which promotes such values as respecting the rights of other persons. This training also helps youngsters to want to use the other skills they have been taught, interpersonal and anger management (The United States Center for Aggression Replacement Training, n.d.). This is the values component (Thurston County, 2001) and it intends to raise the students level of justice, fairness and concern about the rights and needs of others (Goldstein and Glick, 1994).
