A 12 page research paper on obsessive love and codependency. Obsessive love is defined as a social psychology issue and the role of aggression is explored in great detail. The "Fatal Attraction Syndrome" is essentially what this paper attempts to clarify for the reader. partly because every conceivable form of arguable compulsive behavior is classified as an addiction. According to the media and pop psychology, we are a nation of sex addicts, rageholics,
shopaholics, and loveaholics. As such, codependency is no longer viewed as a purely abnormal psychological issue; it has entered the realm of social psychology. What were once labeled as bad
habits and dilemmas, such as the "Cinderella" and "Peter Pan" complexes, or smart women loving too much and making foolish choices, are now considered addictions of others or both. This
viewpoint has led to the burgeoning of the self-help industry in that it keeps Americans obsessed with disease and our capacity to defeat it. Codependency as a Social
Psychological Issue Originally, co-dependency was a psychological term that was applied to the spouses of alcoholic and drug addicts who seemed to exhibit the same symptoms as the addict did.
According to Messner (1996), "In the late 1970s, chemical dependency treatment professionals created the term "codependency" to identify the spouses of alcoholics, many of whom exhibited symptoms similar to alcoholism.
However, as the treatment industry further studied this condition, larger segments of the population were found to exhibit the same symptoms. This gave rise to a host of broad and
sometimes widely divergent definitions of codependency, many emerging from popular sources. These definitions are so all-inclusive that every type of arguably obsessive-compulsive behavior has been labeled an "addiction" and subsumed
