developments of human civilization. As other areas in technology have advanced so has the development of weapons. As the world has increased all of its abilities through the advancement of information technology such as the computer, weapon technology has accelerated. WORLD WAR I World War I signaled the onset of widely accepted industrialized warfare and as the War progressed, weapons began to develop more quickly to meet the wartime needs. New technologies in the development of military aircraft and vehicles were primary during the First World War. Technology in World War I moved toward industrialism and the application of production principles of mass production techniques to killing. In August 1914 the peaceful times ended in Europe. Dual-use technology - that is devices which had originally been designed for civilian use was now being applied to war time killing and defense against being killed. As a part of the trench fighting which took place during the First World War, the use of bolt-action rifles, artillery and machine guns were used. The hand grenade had already been in use, but the crude precursor to the one used in WW I was rapidly improved and developed. Trench fighting, the idea of using trenches as protection to make advances toward the enemy, and the advent of the machine gun in WW I replaced warfare which was fought as cavalry. The onset of WW I also brought about the dawn of the use of aircraft in conflicts of war. Previously aircraft had been used solely as observation vehicles. Initially, the enemy pilots just exchanged waves, but this progressed to the pilots throwing bricks, rocks, spears, grenades and even rope at each others planes.
