Introduction Young people typically do not give the possibility of dying or suffering a catastrophic injury any thought. Certainly Terri Schiavo did not consider catastrophic brain damage to be a possibility when she started a diet that resulted in potassium imbalance that led to her collapse in her home. While cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) made Shiavos heart beat again, her brain was irreparably damaged due to oxygen starvation. She continued to live, but was considered to be in a persistent vegetative state and was dependent on artificial hydration and nutrition. Schiavos husband, Michael, after several years, petitioned a Florida court in order to gain permission to have the feeding tube removed. However, Schiavos parents, Robert and Mary Schindler, opposed this, as they argued that their daughter was conscious. A prolonged court battle ensued, Michael Schiavo won and Terri Schiavo was finally allowed to die, which occurred on March 31, 2005. This protracted legal battle could have been avoided if Schiavo had completed an advance directive. What is an advance directive? MedlinePlus, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), define an "Advance Directives," as "legal documents that allow you to convey your decisions about end-of-life care ahead of time" (NLM & NIH, 2010). These documents are also known as "living wills," and they addresses such issues as: * The use of dialysis and breathing machines * If you want to be resuscitated if breathing or heartbeat stops * Tube feeding [and] * Organ or tissue donation (NLM & NIH, 2010). ...
