in part due to the fact previous studies are based on small clinical samples or samples that have been construed as biased because of self-selection (2000). Authors, in order to develop new information, have created a nationally representative school survey that has been used to compare adopted adolescents with those who were not adopted (2000). Results of this study were significant and demonstrate that adopted adolescents are at higher risk in all of the various areas examined, inclusive of school achievement, fighting , substance abuse, and lying to parents (2000). Psychological well-being seems to be compromised as well in a more general way (2000). The data further demonstrates that a greater number of adopted adolescents have a variety of problems as compared with their peers who have not been adopted (2000). The implications of this study are enormous. For decades, adoption has been touted as the solution for unwanted pregnancy and it was thought that adoptive parents are just as good as birth parents. Why would they not be? Clearly, the ramifications of this study if accepted by the psychological community could be significant. Adoptive parents would second guess their decision and adoptees might also question their behavior and the implications for their lives. They might wonder if they would have been better off had they remained with their birth parents, something that might enter into feelings of anger that are sometimes implicated in such situations anyway. Birth mothers may also feel guilty about putting up a baby for a adoption and she might second guess her decision as well. The study also says a lot about parenting.
