Historians continue to struggle to answer this question, particularly since it appears Iraqs Saddam Hussein is poised to follow in Der Fuhrers footsteps. There have been many diverse adjectives used to describe Hitler that reveal the complexities of the man. There are those who insist he was one of the most impressive political geniuses of all time and others who contend his springboard to power was his charismatic presence as an orator. Then, there are those who dismiss Hitler as being a psychopath who was a prisoner of his inner demons, and those who categorize him as a mass murderer who slaughtered millions for no other reason than the thrill of the kill. Who was Adolf Hitler, and to what extent was he the embodiment of one or all of these characteristics? After the crushing defeat in World War I, German morale was at an all-time low. The nations economy was in shambles because of the massive war debts Germany was expected to pay as a result of the 1918 Treaty of Versailles (Deak, 1999). Hitler systematically made his way through the political ranks, solidifying his power through the formation of his own Nazi (National Socialist German Workers) party. He eventually secured a position in President Paul von Hindenburgs cabinet, which enabled him to become Chancellor and later Supreme Commander of Germany, no minor accomplishment. Before Hitler turned his sights on war, he impressively (and peacefully) presided over regaining the Rhineland and also increased the German territory to include parts of Czechoslovakia.
