little about the life of this remarkable man, which has led to some historians questioning whether or not he actually ever lived at all. Fragments of Abrahams life have
been described in the book of Genesis and the rest of the considerable blanks have been filled in by historical and archaeological studies. According to the Hebrew Bible, Abram
(his given name) was born in the city of Ur, located in Mesopotamia (now known as Iraq between the years best pinpointed to fall between 2100 B.C. to 1500 B.C.
(Van Biema et al, 2002). He was the son of Terah, and it is believed that his family sold spiritual idols (Van Biema et al, 2002). Abraham and
his family were typical of those living in the Middle East at the time in terms of their religious practices. They were polytheistic, which means they worshipped several gods.
According to Piotr Michalowski, an expert on Mesopotamian history at Ann Arbors University of Michigan, "Mesopotamians worshiped a pantheon of deities, including major ones like Sin" (Szulc, 2001, p.
90). Sin was the moon god and the primary deity for the people of Ur (Szulc, 2001). But as Professor Michalowski explains, "Each person also had an additional,
personal god" (Szulc, 2001, p. 90). A close interaction with this personal god might well explain why Abraham was later so receptive to the prospect of worshipping a single
god. The details of Abrahams childhood are practically nonexistent, but Professor Michalowski offers, "Only a very small proportion of the population could read and write... If Abraham was
literate, that would mean he had taken schooling at the house of a priest or bureaucrat who would have taught him a broad range of skills. He would have studied
