I believe then that the main reason Lincoln was such an outstanding president has to do with his moral character. Lincoln was a man of courage, of honor, and of integrity, and in this way he rose above the petty daily details and saw the big picture and how he could contribute to that. In a word, he was a visionary. He took this country and forever changed its course. There is no question that he left his mark. Abraham Lincoln - The Greatest President of The United States Greatness was evident from the moment of Lincolns Inaugural Address when he said: In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The government will not assail you.... You have no oath registered in Heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it (Abraham Lincoln, 2002). What was so amazing about Lincoln was his true devotion to America. He loved this country and its people, and truly was inspired by what he believed to be just and right for the country. Because of this mentality, he often made decisions which were difficult but nonetheless he believed them the moral imperative.
