the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia by Nathan S. Davis (who was a physician himself), the AMA these days is dedicated to being an advocacy/educational and policy organization when
it comes to professional and public health issues (American Medical Association, 2005). The AMA, on one end, is involved in advocacy efforts
dealing with "the most vital issues in medicine today," with one of those issues involving medical liability reform, as well as Medicare, coverage expansion for the uninsured, increasing access to
health care and other issues (American Medical Association, 2005). The advocacy structure is primarily the responsibility of the AMAs House of Delegates (American Medical Association, 2005).
The AMAs Board of Trustees, in the meantime, is responsible for guiding the organization, for ensuring that it maintains its goals "to promote the art and
science of medicine and the betterment of public health" (American Medical Association, 2005). The AMA also has for-profit entities (such as the
Department of Practice Management) that offers "for sales" types of products that, along with membership fees, helps maintain the AMAs structures and offices. The headquarters of the AMA are in
Chicago, with offices also in Washington, D.C. and New Jersey (American Medical Association, 2005). The AMA is sustained by its membership base,
which is mostly physicians, Chiropractors (a recent addition) and students who are in medicine. The theory behind organizations such as the AMA is that there is strength in numbers --
