specialised language which are peculiar to AA. Although the primary goal is, obviously, to refrain from consuming alcohol there are, as Kirkpatrick notes, other issues surrounding the concept of
sobriety. The 12 Step programme is an integral part of AA: however, the same pattern can be found in numerous other self help groups. As noted by "Barb M", there
are various preconceptions which people hold about AA meetings, many of which she found to be inaccurate when she actually attended her first meeting. In order to describe such a
meeting, the student could look at the location, the kind of people who attended, and the topics which were discussed as well as giving her opinions of the meeting and
the group. Here are some examples of such a description. "I thought the meeting would take place in some sort of medical centre, but actually
in was in a village hall, next to the local church. It seemed quite a friendly atmosphere, there were people talking outside in the corridor and someone pointed out the
coffee machine to me. When I went into the actual meeting room, I saw that there was a big group of chairs arranged in a semi-circle: there was room for
about 30 people, but in the end, about 20 attended. The people who were already in the room seemed to know one another, and were chatting to each other. Most
of them smiled at me and said hello; it was a friendly atmosphere. The meeting began with a prayer: most of the attendees participated in
it; I did not, as I am not a Christian. Then there were pieces of AA literature, such as The Twelve Traditions, which were read out. I did not listen
