Although outsiders will truly never understand the inner life of the teacher, and the difficulties they encounter, it helps for teachers themselves to be aware of their fundamental missions. I believe at least, that teachers should take the time to evaluate their own philosophy of teaching. Sarrats assertion that the interior life of the teacher, or the life of the teacher outside of the classroom is most important to teaching, is rather curious. Many outside observers look at the teachers job from different perspectives but generally do see teachers as merely doing their jobs. However, what they do not realize until they get close enough is that the teacher cannot separate himself, or herself, from their role of teaching. And they do play a role, but unlike an actor, the teacher cannot become someone else. Simply, teaching and acting are completely different things. Most teachers do give of themselves, and what the students learn becomes a part and parcel of what the teacher is made of. Sarrats essay touches on very important points, points which many parents miss and sadly, points that teachers often neglect. Sarrats assertions are significant for teachers, prospective teachers and parents. Sarrat explains that teachers beliefs, principles, convictions and interpretation of reality are all pertinent. They influence the students and so it is important as to what the teachers believe and are feeling. In looking back through ones own life, many can recall how teachers influence their own life choices and life chances.
