Erik Eriksons theories on personality development, Ive found it interesting to track how my own life has developed along similar lines. Eriksons theory
of psychosocial development posits that as an individual grows and develops within the context of society, he or she must pass through a total of eight stages. Each stage of
Eriksons development is marked by a particular crisis that must be resolved in order to develop as a healthy individual (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2008). According to researchers Kail and Cavanaugh
in 2008, the failure to resolve any one crisis will severely inhibit ones ability to take care of future crises; in other words, development is stifled. On the other hand,
if one successfully negotiates and comes to terms with the crises faced in each stage, one will, just as in Kohlbergs model of moral development, gain a more universal perspective,
comfortable with ones place in the world and compassionate towards the conditions of others (Crain, 1985). The goal of the first stage
of development, which takes place during the first year of life, is to resolve the crisis between trust and mistrust. Generally, if ones parents (particularly the mother) provide an atmosphere
of support and caring, one will develop a healthy sense of trust in other people as fundamentally good; by contrast, if one is ignored or done injury by their caregivers,
