The following paper examines the reliefs and then focuses primarily on one particular relief which is the Coronation of the Virgin. A Descriptive Essay of Porte Rouge There are seven reliefs at Porte Rouge and they are primarily concerned with religious entities, history, and ideals. The series begins with a relief of the Dormition and then the Funeral, concerning Mary. Then comes the Assumption of Mary which is followed by a depiction of Christ as he is surrounded by angels while he also holds his mothers soul.1 After this particular scene comes the Coronation of Mary and then "The sixth panel, the Majesty panel, depicts Christ adored by the Virgin, while the seventh and last portrays the drama of Theophilus"2 In these reliefs it is evident that a very powerful religious history was being portrayed through perhaps an equal amount of attention to Mary and to Christ, with the intriguing reality of Theophilus thrown in. Davis also mentions how the images are likely "aimed to communicate to the people an essential outline of sacred history and to popularize clerical culture, the sequestered reliefs in the cloister addressed an audience with a significantly different constellation of knowledge, experience, and concerns"3 And, through offering up various images of figures, gestures, various objects and gestures the images become very accessible while linking the religious history to the viewer.
