Han dynasty, he would notice striking differences in the social institution, political structure, and general relations between his own from of government and Han Chinas. Depending on what part of Greece the citizen was from, he would conclude different things about the government. Citizens of Sparta, for example, are notoriously militaristic. Their entire way of life is centered around physical strength, the military, and Spartan government. There was no time for leisure of study for Spartan people. Those Greeks who lived in Athens, however, placed much emphasis on philosophical study and reflection. Students attended Platos Academy or Aristotles Lyceum, and were instructed in the arts, sciences, and philosophy. The rationale was that this education created more well-rounded men, which made better leaders (Greaves, Zaller, Cannistraro, and Murphey, 1997). Athens and Sparta also had very different froms of government. Spartans espoused a court of men who were judged to be superior to everyone else. These men had sole rule of the government, with no input by Spartans not on the court. Athens, on the other hand, instituted the first and most fomaous democracy in history. Although not all Athenians were allowed to vote (e.g., women, slaves, etc.), this system was far more democratic than the Spartan government (Andrea & Overfield, 1994). Before the Han Dynasty came to power in China after the downfall of the Chin Dynasty in 202 B.C., life in China was harsh under teh Legalist approach to government by the Chin. Under the Leaglist System, the writings of Confucius were banned and education was outlawed.
