The student has been put in the role as lead consultant and in that position, has been asked to prepare a report about things to consider when it comes to U.S. expansion. There is little doubt that globalization is a huge issue for firms on both sides of the ocean - and that before any type of expansion into new markets is considered, some research and thought must be put into moving into the area of choice. Though the student doesnt pinpoint what part of Europe this particular company is in, we can assume that its Western Europe, and will write a paper based on that assumption. Although much of this part of Europe is "western," and most of the "western" nations have some things in common, this doesnt necessarily mean that a firm in the UK, France or Germany can simply expand to the U.S. and expect to do business there. In areas such as human resources, brand identity and even management styles, there are differences. For example, in Germany, management styles tend to be more patriarchal than in the U.S. - and German employees are more aware that their jobs are more secure than they might be in the U.S. Because of these factors, factors such as performance feedback are going to be different in both countries. A U.S. employee could be severely offended by a patriarchal style exhibited by a German manager. This is, in fact, what happened when Germany-based Daimler-Benz merged with the United States Chrysler Motor Corp.
