What America is and what she should be are really the same thing when one looks at it from a democratic perspective; from a capitalist viewpoint, America has been following a road paved with gold for but a privileged few since the arrival of the Industrial Revolution. Clearly, technology has been instrumental in moving humanity forward by far greater lengths than any other single entity throughout history. With the advent of machinery, people experienced a considerable reduction in arduous labor, as well as dramatic increase in length and quality of life. This improvement alone provided many Americans the opportunity to finally realize the true meaning behind the concept of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. At the same time, however, it has served to pit Americans against each other in the never-ending quest for personal wealth, completely obscuring the fundamental tenets of a civilized society. Globally, America has helped to influence a number of countries that were otherwise ruled by autocracy and oppression. Some of these transitions were greeted with open arms and even implemented by example of American ideals; others, however, were imposed upon with force when America could no longer stand to watch certain countries treat their own people - as well as other nations - with such indignity and disregard for human life. These countries - and the reaction they have elicited from the United States - are the nations that have single-handedly caused Americas ideals to be brought into question. II.
