of a navy is to provide defense of waterways and navies have been important throughout history. For example, navies have been integral to winning wars and protecting lands, and this
is particularly true in eras prior to the advent of flight. During the Italian Renaissance for example the Venetian Navy was quite strong whereas other navies in the region were
weak. This is an important point as Italy was not only on the forefront of the Renaissance in a myriad of ways-in art, in creativity, in philosophical thought-but in terms
of maintaining the integrity of its land as well. Italy had a strong military force and was a wealthy nation to boot. In the scheme of things, Italy was perhaps
the most important nation in those days. In understanding the importance of the Venetian Navy during the Renaissance it pays to look at
the Renaissance as a whole and to Venice in particular as well. The importance of Italy has sometimes been ignored by historians, but no one can take away Italys prowess
during the time period and the strength of the Venetian Navy is also something significant in assessing the state at the time. It
was during the time of the Renaissance that Italy flourished. The Renaissance occurred primarily between the years 1350 and 1450 in Italy (Roberts, 1993). Of course, while a lot of
things went on at the time, the most striking thing was a change in terms of art and when Michelangelo and Raphael and da Vinci surfaced (1993). Many of these
