Someone beginning a painting and construction business for example will have to be concerned with liability if they hire subcontractors. They also have to be concerned for their own personal safety. If there are no employees, the entrepreneur will be doing the hands on work and one accident can be the demise of the business. Safety becomes an important issue when the work involves dangerous activity such as working on rooftops or with heavy machinery. At the same time, all entrepreneurs need to concern themselves with safety issues as it is something regulated by the government. Also, it is practical to pay attention to such things. Back injuries, or repetitive strain injuries, may translate to the fact that an individual will not be able to work, even if the tasks are mundane. What can be done to address safety issues? First, it should be said that workplace safety is extremely important as accidents will increase workers compensation rates ("Managing Risk," 2005). Also, attention to ergonomics will reduce problems such as back strain or repetitive stress injuries ("Managing Risk," 2005). A small business owner will want to pay attention to workplace safety to ensure quality of life as well as to comply with OSHA laws. One thing that an entrepreneur can do to keep the workplace safety is to implement a first aid safety program (Edwards, 1995). First aid is something that will be necessary in any business. Accidents can occur in most any line of business. Many entrepreneurs can use common sense to implement a safety program.
