the most prevalent operating systems in the world of computers today. It is also one of the most efficient. The development of this operating system occurred over a several year period and, in many respects, can be said to have extended all the way to the late 1980s and the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). David Cutler, a DEC employee, headed up a team of programmers who task was defined as devising a mid-range operating system that was both flexible and powerful. Although UNIX and VMS were already in wide use at this time, the hope was that a new operating system could be designed that would be superior to them for the mid-range computer user. Such was not to immediately be the case, however. DEC canceled the project in its preliminary stages and the world would have to wait for another company to fulfill the objective. That company, of course, would be Microsoft. Microsoft Corporation is presently the worlds largest software manufacturer. Microsofts product line has continued to broaden during their twenty years in the business and their presence has intensified all over the world. XP is one of its latest and more phenomenal accomplishments. Its development, of course, is linked to the development of Windows as a whole. Windows has been one of the most successful operating systems ever in existence. Back in 1993 alone it was estimated that over twelve million copies of Windows were sold per year (Cook). From the initial version of Windows would spring Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows NT, the predecessor of Windows XP.
