Wide Sargasso Sea relates the story of two main characters, Edward Rochester and Antoinette Cosway, each of whom provides a distinct voice within the text. Though Rochesters voice is
often heard expressing rational assertions as the stalwart man of honor, Antoinette is truly the tragic hero of the story. Antoinette, who is conflicted, struggles with her role in
life, and ultimately has to relinquish control to her own increasing madness, is the tragic hero in Rhys Wide Sargasso Sea. Rhys story describes the colonialism of the 19th
century and the impacts on individuals. Antoinette narrates the first and third sections of the book, relating her hopefulness at the onset of her marriage to Rochester and the
increasing strains on her mental capacities. By the end of the story, Antoinettes desctipsions of her own madness are as compelling as they are disturbing. Rochester, on the
other hand, narrates the second sections and is a man who marries out of monetary need, rather than love, and never comes to terms with the strangeness of his surroundings
or his wifes conflicted sense of self. While Antoinette seems an unlikely heroine who goes mad before the end of the story, Rochester lacks the moral conviction or fortitude
to be a heroic character. From the many examples in Wide Sargasso Sea, one can argue that Antoinette is in fact the hero of the story. What must be
recognized is that heroism does not always end in a positive result. Antoinettes inner conflicts are defined by her family history and by her strong sense that she SHOULD
know who she is. Antoinettes life mirrors her mothers to some extent in that she, too, is forced to define herself by the men in her life.
