Russian visual art, like all art forms, has evolved considerably over time. Numerous factors have influenced that evolution. One of the most prevalent of these
factors has been Western influence. From the icon styles Russia inherited from Greek Byzantium churches, to the influence on art wielded by the Orthodox church in the eighth and
ninth centuries, to modern art forms, the West has had a definite impact on Russian graphic art. Russian graphic art is comprised of
a complex mixture of many influences, of religious influences, political influences, and cultural influences, and temporal influences. Interknowledge Corp. (2005) observes that many visitors that travel to the country
are overwhelmed by the: "rather baffling array of exotic forms and alien sensibilities"
Each element of that array, however, can be attributed to specific influences. The Icons for which
Russia is so highly noted, for example, can be traced to Byzantium Greeks, to that fringe of cultural intermingling that is identified as the line of demarcation between the East
and the West. It is important to point out that our concept of civilization varies according to our own culture.
The most basic of separations between world cultures is East and West. This separation is both geographic and biological with those representatives of the Eastern cultures being comprised primarily
