womens involvement was a critical duality during this watershed period in history is both grand and far-reaching; that expectations inherent to this involvement served to open both doors and eyes
to the womens suffrage movement speaks to how the war ultimately worked to their social and political benefit. Indeed, as Reid (1999) points out in Slacks and Calluses: Our
Summer in a Bomber Factory, women were counted on like never before to maintain the home during World War II; however, as much as they were instrumental in keeping those
home fires burning while the men were away at battle, they also played an important role in the war effort itself by taking jobs heretofore reserved only for men, not
the least of which included trolley car operators, delivery truck drivers, street cleaners, traffic directors, as well as numerous other men only industries like aircraft manufacturing.
The shortage of male workers who were off fighting for their country left a tremendous void in the workforce, a hole women were only too happy to
fill. However, while filling that void they created another at home by not being there to uphold their traditional gender duties. This stereotypical clash with womens new on-the-job
expectations created a shift in the treatment they received when toiling at a mans job, wearing a mans attire (slacks instead of a skirt) and adopting a mans life at
least for the swing shift. In short, women were crossing over into the clearly defined mans world and in the process were blurring the line between stereotypical gender roles.
