Today he lives in California, where he edits Van Hoc Nghe Thuat, a Vietnamese-language literary journal that he founded (Phien). Through Vo Phiens works, we get a look at the culture, beliefs and expectations of a people most of us know only through the mechanism of a long and distressing war fought on their soil. In his story The Key, Vo Phien describes the reactions of a group of South Vietnamese to their arrival on Guam. They have managed to escape in the last days of the war, and are now beginning their new life. Since this is a paper in which the student is to give his or her reaction to the story, they should take the time to really think about what theyve read and their reaction to it; its not necessary to retell the plot, except for those details that help the student explain their feelings. The paper could be as follows. The first thing a reader notices is the symbolism of the shower. Phien says that he, along with 9,000 other refugees, came to Guam by ship; the island "seemed to consist of thousands of lights" (Phien). The ship dropped anchor "at 3 a.m. July 5, 1975" and passengers began to disembark (Phien). The first thing that greeted them was a hot shower (Phien). An astute reader who knows European history will probably have a twinge of uneasiness at this point, since Nazis herded the Jews off the trains and into showers, where they were gassed.
