the way in which the viewer interprets them in the light of other knowledge. For example, a picture of a wedding is augmented by a caption which tells the viewer that subsequently, the camp in which the subjects lived was ravaged by conflict: the wedding is a static representation of a point at which conflict was less important than unity. This is emphasized by the fact that Said mentions intra-Palestinian fighting - the source of the conflict is not something which has been imposed from another state, external to and separate from the subjects, but is directly linked to a construct of national or cultural unity which has later been shattered. The viewer, as an outside observer, remains outside the image, but the written text adds a further layer of interpretation to the image as it stands and allows the viewer to comprehend it, to some extent, from the inside. The interaction between states and individuals is central to Saids theme. The term refers to both political and emotional states: the creation, maintenance or destruction of the former has a direct impact on the latter. States are a focus of group identity, of ownership and participation, a way of defining us as opposed to them. A political state, an emotional state and a state of being cannot be separated. However, when Said tells us of the intra-Palestinian conflict which has affected the state of the people in the wedding photograph, he does not specify which groups or factions were involved. The us and them could refer to Jews and Muslims, different groups of Muslims, or even groups who belong to neither religious culture. It is the impact of conflict on the state of togetherness and unity which is the significant factor. ...
