All too often, those who have been and are in power have used that power to actualize their own prejudices and hate against those who have the least power. The troubling fact today is the widespread use of violence among all classes of people (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, 2001). In the United States, we have been faced with a new type of violence and higher rates of violent acts, like random violence, drive-by shootings, muggings in every major city that has extended even to what once were quiet country lanes. Women and children are often the victims of rage and violent tempers. They are too often less safe in their own homes than they are on the streets. Children are shooting children. More and more gangs are fighting between themselves but innocent bystanders are often killed or injured. Hate crimes are escalating. Violence is rampant in our entertainment media from television to the big screens to video games (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, 2001). It has become a fact of life. Families have broken down more and more over the last three decades. Violence has gone beyond the streets and is found on school grounds, in the workplace and in the home (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, 2001). Those who live in poverty have always been the victims of the most violence but in todays society, violent acts have moved into the higher class neighborhoods. Thus, violence in America today affects every class, ethnicity, race and geographic region. With the breakdown in the society, violence simply breeds more violence (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, 2001).
