On the other side of the country are children being rounded up and hauled off to locales in order to protect their innocence. Charges of sexual abuse at a Mormon compound has also shocked the nation. Does the government, and the police that are the strong arm of the law, have a right to conduct business as they do, impeding the rights of citizens? There are often cases where the ACLU becomes involved, claiming that the rights of the people are truncated in favor of the government. This seems to be the case a good deal of the time. New techniques such as the overuse of video surveillance and stun guns help police. The surveillance is used to catch people in certain acts such a making drug deals or running red lights. They are also used in the police cars themselves. The stun guns are used to subdue individuals. Some argue that the stun guns, which are non-lethal weapons should be used because that is better than using real guns (Lewer, 2003). Of course, when used inappropriately, stun guns have caused serious injury and even death. In some way, the police have a false sense of security in using these devices. Stun guns are thought to be harmless so they are used more frequently. For instance, there is well-known footage of a student speaking in protest of a political speaker and the police used a stun gun on him. This was to many largely inappropriate.
