When we look back at Victorian England we may see a time where we have very strong and differentiated gender preconceptions in the middle classes. However, although seen as a time of stability and moral values this was in reality a time of change, social classes were becoming separated in terms of income and the way that they were viewed. If we look at the working classes then we may start to envisage the work houses and the mine, child labour and prostitution, as typified in many of the Jack the Ripper murders. In this time we can see that the prostitute both typified and represent femininity as well as the way in which it repudiated the ideology that surrounded femininity. If we look to the period between 1860 and 1880 then there are some major changes in social attitudes, regarding the role of the genders and sex. This can be seen as a reflection of the changing social attitudes of the time, which in turn were influenced by events class, race, nationalism, and imperialism, which in turn would reflect on the way that different people were seen. When we look at this time we can see that there was already a change, the loss of colonial power was well established, 1856 had seen the loss of Australia with the granting of power to an Australian government (Reuters, 1997).
