Our gender comes replete with many societal expectations. Those expectations extend to every facet of our lives and can, in some cases, manifest is serious problems in terms of what society expects of us. For a woman, in particular, these problems can be almost insurmountable. While we are accustmed to reading about the problems of gender in association with such things as equal rights, we seldom explore the depth to which inequality can reach. Chimene Keitners "Victim or Vamp: Images of Violent Women in the Criminal Justice System" and K.B. Turner and James B. Johnsons "The Effects of Gender on Amount of Bail Set", however, provide a more indepth look into the impacts of gender into one unexpected facet of our lives. That facet is the criminal justice system. Keitner (2002) and Turner and Johnson (2006) illuminate the fact that women are treated more than unfairly by our criminal justice system. Women who commit acts of extreme violence, in particular, find themselves subject to much harsher treatment in criminal justice than do me who commit comparable acts. Women who commit acts of extreme violence are considered an anomaly in our society. Those who do commit such acts, consequently, are regarded in a way by society that is very distinct from the way we regard males who commit similar acts. Women Aileen Wuornos, for example, stand as prime examples of a women criminal that is viewed as pure evil, as a demon, by society.
