in the United States, we continue to fight the battle of abuse and violence against women. If nothing else the 1995 trial of the notorious football player O.J. Simpson pointed
out how violence can get out of hand and result in murder. There isnt a day that doesnt go by in a part of the country that someone doesnt pick
up a newspaper and read about a women who has been killed, simply because her significant other, boyfriend or husband beat her to death.
The problem with specific statistics about violence against women, however, is that this type of thing tends to go unreported for various reasons - for one thing, the
womans self-esteem is on the line, and more often than not, she will not want to press charges if she is beaten or raped. This is also why the statistics
we have tend to vary greatly from one another - no one is truly sure, exactly, how much violence goes on. But that it is a problem there is little
doubt. According to statistics compiled by the National Organization of Women (2002), four women die in the U.S. on a daily basis
because of domestic violence. According to the FBI, thats about 1,400 a year - with most of those killings occurring by what NOW dubs as "intimates," in other words, people
who are known to their victims (NOW, 2004). NOW also indicates that "the most conservative" estimates when it comes to battering
indicate that two to four million women (of all races and classes) are battered each year, with about 170,000 of those incidents serious enough to warrant some type of hospitalization
