Von Huben 6/2010 Please Introduction Fear is a potent weapon. People who are afraid often cannot think clearly, and at times unscrupulous people use that as a means to gain control. It is particular distressing when governments use this tactic against their own citizens. This paper considers this type of situation as portrayed in two books, Waiting for the Barbarians by J. Coetzee and Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. Discussion Americans had a vivid lesson in the use of fear: the 9/11 attack was legitimately frightening; but Bush kept stirring up the emotions of Americans until he was given carte blanche to do as he pleased, which resulted in the invasion of Iraq and the continuing war in Afghanistan among other things. It can be argued that as a result of the Bush Administrations foreign policy tactics, Americans are much less safe in the world than ever before. And Bush was able to get away with this by using fear against the American public. The two books under discussed herein share this pattern: oppressive governments use fear to keep their citizens in line> Even though the countries are thousands of miles apart, the coercion is much the same in principle, although the details differ. Persepolis is an interesting and unusual novel in that it is a graphic novel written as an autobiography.
