While many policymakers have attempted to bridge this gap with policies aimed at helping African American students have access to equal opportunity, the gap still exists. Progress certainly has been made however and this paper will examine those achievements and how they have impacted the educational system. Furthermore, this paper will assess the problems which African American students face in terms of their education and the opportunities which are available to them. The problem of this inequality persists and permeates every aspect of our society, and therefore it is extremely important to recognize the problems which do exist in order to determine what future policymakers need to concern themselves with. This is such an important subject because as the African American population continues to grow, their educational foundation will indeed affect the entire country. Whatever social and educational problems are particular to this group, the impact will be felt as these students leave school without a proper education and then immigrate into the work force and are perhaps not qualified. Therefore, equality of education should be an important topic for everyone to concern themselves with in this country. The Problem With African American Education in America First, it is important to recognize that in fact the achievement gap between African American students and white students does indeed exist in American classrooms today (Bainbridge and Lasley).
