States relationship as it pertains to Japanese foreign policy likely to continue? Or might there be intrusions on such policy in the future? In order to answer that question several things need to be explored. A look at United States foreign policy today in respect to Japan, and any current problems, is important. Tong seems to think that there is a dilemma and that the United States faces two problems with Japan. The first is geopolitical, and the second economic, but both threaten the future of the U.S. Japanese alliance and inevitably the overall strength and stamina of Americas relations with Asia at large (Tong PG). Tong believes that United States foreign policy addresses neither of these adequately (PG). Thus, it looks as though, if one would accept the following premises, that a foreign policy change is in order. Tong suggests that the United States to embark on negotiations with Japan to establish a "Japan-America Free Economic Area." He sees the problem as having to do with Japan being an Asian allied country (PG). Tong sees strained relations between the countries as Japan most easily associates itself with Asia as opposed to the U.S. He admits that the Japanese U.S. relationship that has been built over the past fifty years is considerable but not indestructible (PG). Tong suggests that Japan sees itself as being somewhere between East and West (PG). This is an awkward position for the country.
