Essay / Research Paper Abstract

5 pages in length. Without any further understanding of paranoid schizophrenia, the average moviegoer may watch and become enthralled with A Beautiful Mind but never consider the story as being grounded in reality; indeed, the expansive nature of Nash's cognitive ability that spanned from one end of the spectrum to another in an unfathomable amount of time is surely a theatrical embellishment so common of Hollywood's poetic license. However, not only is Nash's story realistically depicted, but it is also portrayed his level of functioning in such a way as to tap into its reality. The only downside is the filmmakers' inability to capture exactly what transpired in Nash's mind during the phases of his disease, for only he can accurately understand what he felt. Instead of seeking a literal application of Nash's experiences, they sought - and ultimately achieved - one that captured the spirit of his struggle. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Instead of seeking a literal application of Nashs experiences, they sought - and ultimately achieved - one that captured the spirit of his struggle. Paranoid schizophrenia (organic brain disease) impairs virtually every aspect of ones ability to function normally within society. For Nash, however, this rather significant mental encumbrance did not hinder his ability to become a mathematical prodigy. A Beautiful Mind illustrates how those deemed by medical specification to be wholly incapable of engaging in certain mental achievements due to physiological limitations sometimes overcome even the greatest disabilities - and shock those who diagnosed the disease in the first place - to reach intellectual successes even those of sound minds have difficulty achieving. That Nash realizes such tremendous accomplishments (premorbid) does not preclude the disease from ultimately overtaking his very being (Nassal 24); rather, in a quirk that even science cannot fully explain, he is able to separate - if only on a superficial basis - his beautiful mind from the one that wracks him with confusion (residual). Contemporary knowledge of schizophrenia has grown with the medical communitys understanding of the brain and the personality, a realization that made it possible for Nashs extraordinary mathematical ...
