                                                    Underground pollution is a reality for much of the United States.  The problem comes with development.  In Miami-Dade  
                                                
                                                    and areas like it the problem is particularly intensive.  The tremendous demand for potable water even contributes to the issue.  Miami-Dades groundwater suffers not just from past wrongs  
                                                
                                                    like unlined landfills but from issues like insufficient stormwater treatment, and the direct discharges of domestic and industrial waste.  All of these issues add up to a long history  
                                                
                                                    of underground pollution, the impacts of which are not likely to be completely resolved any time in the near future.        Numerous old landfills  
                                                
                                                    are a particular concern in regard to underground pollution in Miami-Dade.  The now-closed Superfund site Munisport Landfill is a particularly appropriate example of the problems that can result.  
                                                
                                                    According to the Environmental Protection Agencys Caliber Cleanup Site Summaries (last updated on April 25, 2006) the 291 acre site the landfill started operation in the 1960s and initially only  
                                                
                                                    accepted construction debris.  Ultimately, and without the appropriate permitting, the landfill began accepting solid waste.          The EPA estimates that some  
                                                
                                                    six million cubic yards of solid waste was placed in the landfill before operations were stopped.  The landfill was not designed for this type of deposit.  It was  
                                                
                                                    unlined and no leachate control mechanisms were in place.  Consequently, groundwater contamination occurred.  That contamination included the release of high levels of ammonia impacting both the groundwater and
