history, France has been a country of immense contrasts - in geography, ethnicity, and language. Interestingly, the French culture has flourished not because national unity, but because it successfully
"incorporated many conflicting impulses." 1 France is a country of extremes and has always been able to adapt to rapidly changing times while remaining true to its emphasis upon
the individual. Through a revolution of the people, France was able to miraculously transition from an aristocratic monarchy to a republic that ultimately set the standard of democracy for
all of Western Europe. But Adolf Hitlers Nazi invasion of Europe beginning in the fall of 1939 would present the greatest modern challenge to Frances Third Republic. An
armistice signed in June of 1940 approved the unthinkable - an annexation of a part of France to Germany with the German occupation government headquartered in the small French town
of Vichy. Historian Jeremy D. Popkin observed in his text A History of Modern France, "The four years of military defeat and foreign occupation France suffered between 1940
and 1944 form one of the darkest and most controversial chapters in the countrys modern history. To this day, ordinary citizens and historians argue bitterly about who should bear
the blame for the defeat, about the conduct of the population and the government during the war, and about the extent of resistance to the occupation. What one historian
